In 1971, a teacher at West Haven Middle School takes attendance in a classroom with twelve students and thirteen desks. When Peter Valez answers a dead intercom's call with one word—present—the room seals its own history behind the walls.
Decades later, Bram Kestrel and Nozomi Kuroda investigate the abandoned Room Thirteen, where attendance is announced every morning and one living person is always marked absent. To break the roll call, they must uncover the student who was never enrolled before the last bell makes the class permanent.
